If you're thinking about quitting, fake quit first
Two of my favorite newsletter writers talk about saying "no" and quitting.
I’m so happy that one of my favorite newsletter writers, Chrissy Hennessey from So Relatable, interviewed another great newsletter writer, Kara Cutruzzula of Brass Ring Daily.
You need to read the entire interview, but I wanted to point out something Kara said in the interview that I think is brilliant.
She shares a strategy from her book Do It (Or Don’t) for saying “no” to something. She says this:
If you’re on the fence and trending towards no, write a fake response and see how you feel. Here’s a starter for you:
Thank you so much for thinking of me for this great opportunity. I’m sorry I won’t be able to move forward / participate / attend right now, but am wishing you a lot of success with it.
Obviously, fill in with relevant details! If writing it feels like a weight lifted, then send it.
As I read this, I was thinking how useful this would be if you were thinking about stepping away from or quitting a project or even a job. Type up a fake email or resignation letter and try to picture your life without that project or job in your life. If you feel lighter and happier at the prospect, you have your answer.
Have you quit something or said “no” recently?

Thanks for reading. This newsletter is a consistently inconsistent publication of my thoughts because I basically gave up contributing to social media. The closest I get to publishing shorter messages is in Notes.
If you enjoy my thoughts and want to encourage more writing, you can do one or all of the following: leave a comment and join in the discussion, buy my books or become a paid subscriber (you can also subscribe for free, and I welcome it).
I want to send out a special “Thank you” to recent paid subscribers. Y’all are the best! If you ever want me to talk about something specific in this space, all you have to do is ask.
